A new Gainesville mural is in the works \u2014 this one crafted entirely from bottle caps, as part of a budding partnership between the city and the University of Florida\u2019s chapter of #UNLITTER.<\/p>\n
The student-led organization at UF is part of a global movement to promote environmental awareness and sustainability through individual action and among corporations.<\/p>\n
In September, the UF chapter reached out to Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe about creating a mural in the city made entirely of bottle caps. While logistics like the location are still being determined, the cap collection is well underway \u2013 they have about 1,000 now.<\/p>\n
\u201cVisual mediums are a great way to connect people,\u201d Poe said. \u201cThey draw on our emotions, and they have impacts in ways that seeing a video or listening to someone talk just cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n
#UNLITTER doesn\u2019t have one central storage space, so caps are sprinkled in the nooks and crannies of executive board members\u2019 homes.<\/p>\n
Chloe Schwab, the organization\u2019s event coordinator, said her patio is polluted with huge buckets bursting with bottle caps. The caps aren\u2019t kept exclusively outside of her apartment, either.<\/p>\n
Her apartment\u2019s leasing office doesn\u2019t technically allow the buckets to remain on her porch, so Schwab seeks other places to store them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a jar in my kitchen, there\u2019s a jar in my room,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The UF marine science junior said she conceived the idea for a mural after joining the executive board about one year ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was trying desperately to think of anything that reuses another item for some kind of swag,\u201d she said. \u201cIn the process, I fell into the bottle caps wormhole.\u201d<\/p>\n

While bottle caps are generally\u00a0recyclable<\/a>, plastic bottle caps are not accepted for recycling in Gainesville according to the\u00a0Recycling Resource Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n Tom Strickland, the recycling coordinator for the city, said because plastic water bottle caps are so small, they are liable to fall through the belts that move materials through the recycling process. The caps are also made from a harder plastic than the rest of the bottle, he said.<\/p>\n Though clean caps can be reused by\u00a0The Repurpose Project<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0Gainesville Women\u2019s Club<\/a>, most are discarded and end up in landfills; the mural aims to eliminate some of this waste.<\/p>\n The #UNLITTER team is collecting more than bottle caps, too. Schwab said they will take anything from jam jar lids to mayonnaise container caps.<\/p>\n \u201cSomeone gave me a hairspray cap, and I was like, \u2018OK, I\u2019m about. I like it,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Shannon Sawtell, the director of the organization, said the organization is also looking to create partnerships among some Alachua County Public Schools to raise awareness about environmental issues and collect more caps through drives to fill the mural.<\/p>\n \u201cWe need several thousand, and a lot of our members are zero waste, so it makes it a little more difficult, but we\u2019re very excited,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Given how spread out the collection is, Sawtell said the estimate of 1,000 caps is fluid.<\/p>\n The hope is for the mural to be displayed this summer.<\/p>\n Until then, #UNLITTER will continue collecting caps, curating design ideas, hosting cleanups, promoting simple ways to practice sustainability and even conducting yoga sessions<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re very lucky to be in Gainesville, which is an area that\u2019s very accepting of all of these environmental movement projects,\u201d Sawtell said. \u201cI could see that being a barrier in some bigger cities, or some cities that aren\u2019t as welcoming, but we\u2019ve been very lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n Recycling your Plastic Bottle Tops can become a work of art.
