Although your plants<\/a> can\u2019t tell you what\u2019s wrong, they\u2019ll give you plenty of signs when something isn\u2019t quite right in their care routine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One such sign is curled leaves \u2013 when the outer edge of the leaf begins to curl or roll inwards towards the centre, exposing the underneath of the leaf in the process.<\/p>\n

While no one wants to see their plant looking miserable, curled leaves are relatively easy to fix \u2013 so you don\u2019t need to panic if you\u2019ve noticed your plant\u2019s leaves starting to turn.<\/p>\n

In fact, unlike, many of the other problems your plant can face<\/a>, curled leaves are often completely reversible. All you\u2019ll need to do is address whatever is causing the leaves to curl and they should return to their former glory over the course of a week or so.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth noting that plants that like low to moderate light \u2013 like calatheas<\/a> and philodendrons<\/a> \u2013 have leaves that are more prone to curling, so you\u2019ll want to pay particular attention to these if you\u2019re lucky enough to have any in your collection.<\/p>\n

1. Too much heat or light<\/h2>\n

One of the main reasons why a plant might be curling its leaves is simply because it\u2019s been exposed to too much heat or light. While a plant needs both of these things to survive, different plant types will need different amounts.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlants can get heat stress from being exposed to too much direct light or heat \u2013 to counteract this, they try to conserve moisture by curling up their leaves,\u201d explains Richard Cheshire, Patch\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0plant doctor.<\/p>\n

\u201cMove the plant out of direct sunlight or intense heat and be sure to mist the leaves regularly to stop this from happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cheshire continues: \u201cTry to keep your plants somewhere with a warm, even temperature \u2013 if a room is a comfortable temperature for you, it will be comfortable for the plant.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is something you\u2019ll particularly want to keep in mind as we move towards winter and you think about switching on your heating \u2013 try to keep your plants away from radiators and other sources of heat to ensure they\u2019re exposed to an even temperature.<\/p>\n

2. Not enough water<\/h2>\n

In a similar way to reason number one, underwatered plants will curl up their leaves to conserve moisture \u2013 but there are also a number of key signs which will tell you when underwatering is the problem in particular.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf underwatering is the problem then the leaves will look drier,\u201d Cheshire explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo fix this, feel the soil. If it\u2019s bone dry, you should increase the frequency of watering. However, you\u2019ll still only want to water when the top two inches of the soil feel dry.\u201d<\/p>\n

3. Ageing growth<\/h2>\n

While curling leaves are often a sign that your plant is experiencing a problem, that isn\u2019t always the case \u2013 sometimes, the leaf itself is just getting old.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re seeing curling leaves near the bottom of the plant it probably just means they\u2019ve completed their life cycle,\u201d Cheshire explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this is the case, there\u2019s nothing to worry about \u2013 you can snip off the odd wilted leave or flower, and this will encourage your plant to put its energy into new growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
