As of Monday, the country has recorded four local cases; confirmed global infections currently number around 100.<\/p>\n<p>Belgium\u2019s compulsory measures apply only to patients with a confirmed infection. Close contacts are not required to self-isolate but are encouraged to remain vigilant, especially if in contact with vulnerable people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInfected persons will have to go into contact isolation until the injuries have healed (they will receive concrete instructions about this from the treating doctor),\u201d a version of the government announcement translated from Dutch said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. meanwhile has <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/1077329\/20220520_monkeypox-contact-tracing-classification-and-vaccination-matrix.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/1077329\/20220520_monkeypox-contact-tracing-classification-and-vaccination-matrix.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0vWhimLG3CzNp4ARSEqF0q\">said those who have a high risk <\/a>of catching the disease should self-isolate for 21 days. That includes household contacts or medical professionals who may have come into contact with an infected patient.Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus \u2014 part of the smallpox family \u2014 with symptoms including rashes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/monkeypox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/monkeypox\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0qm6bSsX-ZcBjX6DbTCH9L\">fever, headaches, muscle ache, swelling and backpain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Though typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/20\/what-is-monkeypox-and-how-dangerous-is-it-cases-are-rising-globally.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/20\/what-is-monkeypox-and-how-dangerous-is-it-cases-are-rising-globally.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0tXcXtJlrwUhVnayzuOXFL\">less severe than smallpox<\/a>, health experts are growing concerned about the genesis of a recent outbreak, starting in early May, in countries beyond Central and West Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Health authorities, including the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/s0518-monkeypox-case.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/s0518-monkeypox-case.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw15hbWnyseub8kbvF9fTwCr\">Centers for Disease Control and infection<\/a> and the U.K.\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/monkeypox-cases-confirmed-in-england-latest-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/monkeypox-cases-confirmed-in-england-latest-updates&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw35b1xAY5zC7o9JwH_Wmd0R\">Health Security Agency<\/a>, said they have noted a particular concentration of cases among men who have sex with men, and urged gay and bisexual men in particular to be aware of any unusual rashes or lesions.<\/p>\n<p>As of Saturday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2022-DON385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2022-DON385&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2lzHrqVwI8ceQNg4JWn1I7\">World Health Organization<\/a> reported there were 92 cases in 12 countries, and a further 28 suspected cases under investigation. It usually spreads via human-to-human or human-to-animal contact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEpidemiological investigations are ongoing, however, reported cases thus far have no established travel links to endemic areas,\u201d the WHO said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2022-DON385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2022-DON385&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2lzHrqVwI8ceQNg4JWn1I7\">statement posted on its website<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on currently available information, cases have mainly but not exclusively been identified amongst men who have sex with men (MSM) seeking care in primary care and sexual health clinics,\u201d it added.The recent surge in community cases, particularly within urban areas, is now raising concerns of a wider outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have it appear now \u2014 more than 100 cases in 12 different countries with no obvious connection \u2014 means we have to figure out exactly what\u2019s happening,\u201d Seth Berkley, CEO of global vaccine alliance Gavi, told CNBC Monday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is we don\u2019t know what that is and therefore how severe it\u2019s going to be. But it\u2019s likely that we\u2019re going to see more cases,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Though most cases of monkeypox are mild and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/treatment.html#:~:text=Currently%2C%20there%20is%20no%20proven,%2C%20antivirals%2C%20and%20VIG%20treatments.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/treatment.html%23:~:text%3DCurrently%252C%2520there%2520is%2520no%2520proven,%252C%2520antivirals%252C%2520and%2520VIG%2520treatments.&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3JLXV8QSXOsbhNWH154CEQ\">typically resolve within two to four weeks<\/a>, there is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/treatment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/treatment.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1U-DKkD73WW--Zc7iKRjgM\">no proven vaccine<\/a>. The smallpox vaccine has proven 85% effective in preventing infection, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/britain-offers-smallpox-shot-monkeypox-cases-spread-europe-2022-05-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/britain-offers-smallpox-shot-monkeypox-cases-spread-europe-2022-05-19\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3F55PFETTOT9JcFETZB4ko\">some countries<\/a> have already begun <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-61520228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-61520228&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1654174570349000&amp;usg=AOvVaw38O4oEqJLSuFe0XN0FS_4t\">stockpiling doses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Berkley cautioned that the new outbreak, occurring even as the existing coronavirus pandemic is \u201cnot over yet,\u201d was a warning to authorities to invest more resources into infectious diseases.
