It\u2019s become overrun by clickbait, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/youtube-is-dead-and-something-new-is-replacing-it-14d061c2f0cb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/youtube-is-dead-and-something-new-is-replacing-it-14d061c2f0cb&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027820000&amp;usg=AOvVaw01hBYnYjydXEDG2msoj2tx\">low-quality content<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/youtube-is-dead-and-something-new-is-coming-132322b09be6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/youtube-is-dead-and-something-new-is-coming-132322b09be6&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027820000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0sEzFosYlvflxraz1IH8I7\">censorship<\/a>, and is no longer a place where starving artists and gumshoes can make a living.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-ac0d\">We came to YouTube in search of creative freedom and a platform that would showcase our work to the world. And while it did that for a while, YouTube is now nothing better than television with extra steps.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-daf5\">I\u2019m done.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-3bdc\">Like Netflix to Blockbuster, we need a better solution.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-7010\">It\u2019s time to move on to other platforms that don\u2019t suck. Here are five better alternatives to YouTube:<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-c28a\">1. Twitter<\/h1>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-f050\">\u201cSplitting revenue with video creators like YouTube could be a huge unlock. We could literally give video creators 100% of their ad revenue up to $1m then do split.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-8f73\">\u2014 Elon Musk Private Twitter Texts<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-a6d3\">The Elon Musk Twitter texts are an absolute masterclass in how things get done at the highest level. Do CEOs like Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, Larry Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried decide the fate of the world in corporate board rooms? No!<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-864a\">They do it over group chat, apparently.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-20a7\">If you haven\u2019t read <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23112929\/elon-musk-text-exhibits-twitter-v-musk.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23112929\/elon-musk-text-exhibits-twitter-v-musk.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027820000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1wId0DAPYekSu6LiMxgn1x\">these messages<\/a>, you\u2019re missing out on the most important thing happening in tech right now.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-fac1\">It\u2019s a war between old money and new money, with Twitter being the ultimate weapon. In a nutshell, Elon wants to make Twitter compete against YouTube. It\u2019s fucking nuts.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-cfb1\">Here\u2019s what he has planned:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-de1e\"><strong>Twitter Video:<\/strong> Elon wants a dedicated CONTENT CREATION team that publishes on Twitter first, and he plans on doing this by giving them the best % ad revenue split in the industry.<\/li>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-75c6\"><strong>Transparency Team:<\/strong> He wants to make the algorithm for these creators more understandable and fair.<\/li>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-38be\"><strong>Mr. Beast: <\/strong>Elon wants to recruit Mr. Beast as a dedicated Twitter creator, and I\u2019m assuming they have other creators in mind as well.<\/li>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-6d0b\"><strong>Blockchain Twitter: <\/strong>You will have to pay tiny amounts of crypto to post a message on Twitter which will cut out the vast majority of spam and bots. He also wants a blockchain database.<\/li>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-1c8e\"><strong>Pay For DMs: <\/strong>You will be able to DM who you want for .01 a DM (500,000 followers = $5,000) so if you want to promote a podcast or new book you can message a celeb.<\/li>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-c664\"><strong>Massive Layoffs:<\/strong> Elon is considering cutting staff at Twitter from 8,000 to 3,000, and he\u2019s reportedly planning on doing this on day one. Yikes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-a5f6\">I don\u2019t care what you think about Elon, he clearly has some creative ideas on how to make Twitter the go-to platform for video creators.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-1ecf\">If anything was ever going to compete against YouTube, it\u2019s this.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-6bde\">2. TikTok<\/h1>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-bcef\">I\u2019m <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/tiktok-is-slowly-destroying-a-new-generation-804cfdfbae03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/tiktok-is-slowly-destroying-a-new-generation-804cfdfbae03&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027821000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2CIa7aUalLtIKE7PXebOEV\">on record<\/a> saying TikTok is hot garbage rotting your kid\u2019s brain like a hikikomori in a Japanese anime, but I\u2019m also on record saying it\u2019s the future of social media.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-1f35\">And that\u2019s because TikTok has made a major shift towards long-form content.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-8187\">In the past, TikTok was all about short, Vine-like videos that were popular with teenagers. And even though the videos are still shot on a phone and often have terrible production value, they can be strangely compelling from time to time!<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-d21f\">Still\u2026<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-93eb\">When all\u2019s said and done, TikTok isn\u2019t for me.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-87be\">(And the <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/tiktok-is-slowly-destroying-a-new-generation-804cfdfbae03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/tiktok-is-slowly-destroying-a-new-generation-804cfdfbae03&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027821000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2CIa7aUalLtIKE7PXebOEV\">Chinese corruption<\/a> and censorship don\u2019t help)<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-5a4d\">But they are stealing the younger demographic right out from under YouTube\u2019s nose.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-52c6\">3. Rumble<\/h1>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-8ba4\">\u201cEveryone has a Lambo or a Ferrari, it\u2019s easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-fdec\">\u2014 Top G Andrew Tate<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-adfa\">When YouTube banned <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/andrew-tate-is-now-my-hero-5df8a8ed8ca7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/medium.com\/yardcouch-com\/andrew-tate-is-now-my-hero-5df8a8ed8ca7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027821000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1oXpH3wHeronQtQAUxpTMa\">Andrew Tate<\/a>, they opened up the floodgates for a mass exodus of right-wing content creators and viewers. And while there are many platforms that have tried to capitalize on this, the most successful so far has been Rumble.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-bcaf\">Rumble is a Canadian-based video-sharing website that has become something of a refuge for conservative content creators.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-8e32\">Steven Crowder is there, Russel Brand, Dan Bongino, heck, even the second oldest newspaper in America the <em>New York Post <\/em>who turned to the platform after a story was censored and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/26\/zuckerberg-blames-fbi-for-censoring-the-posts-hunter-biden-scoop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/26\/zuckerberg-blames-fbi-for-censoring-the-posts-hunter-biden-scoop\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027821000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2UJX1P9iBXTzjVBJh71Z8A\">happened to be accurate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-11f1\">I\u2019m not sure how I feel about a 100% partisan website, but video platforms are heading the way of the media. If you\u2019re a rational thinker who wants a fuller picture you\u2019ll have your left-wing platform (YouTube, NYT), right-wing (Rumble, WSJ) and centrist (Medium, Substack).<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-a7e1\">4. LBRY\/Odysee<\/h1>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-c16f\">I find a more interesting mix of content on Odysee these days than on YouTube. LBRY is an open-source, decentralized protocol for storing and sharing digital content. It\u2019s sort of like a cross between YouTube and BitTorrent.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-0579\">This is the most popular picture in the comments on Odysse:<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"CToWUd a6T\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/ci5.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/dnJealUDHr1f_NuGJXUgMuFQ2ITtxgYRtDYiae1Bt6UEqbS4styDg2tgjOWQ2FiKrAlutinzHbati0CLjRPopQCJOQwk6nSvSA=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/512\/0*6apnLaKwA-yPx4jZ.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"512\" data-bit=\"iit\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/odysee.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/odysee.com\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027821000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2GZHegyAi5MzU-pceFMhP0\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-269e\">Odysse feels like the early days of YouTube: There\u2019s community, upvotes and downvotes, and a mix of content that you won\u2019t find anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-2de2\">The one downside is that it\u2019s not as user-friendly as YouTube (as most crypto solutions often are).<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-cee4\">But it has potential.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-c8df\">5. There really isn\u2019t a comparable platform yet<\/h1>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-9403\">YouTube took an incalculable loss of money to create what they have.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-562e\">They were able to do this because they were owned by Google, who could afford to lose a few billion dollars while they stole our data and gave us algorithms <em>loco parentis<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-2913\">YouTube is a datafarm.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-93a9\">It\u2019s why \u201ccompetitors\u201d like Daily Motion and Vimeo never stood a chance.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-8c65\">Nothing besides a pre-established platform could ever give YouTube a run for its money \u2014 and that\u2019s why I\u2019m excited to see what Elon Musk and Co. do with Twitter Video. (Trademark?)<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-98f7\">Final Thought<\/h1>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-2a67\">There really isn\u2019t another comparable platform to YouTube as of now, but people are looking for one. It\u2019s because there are obvious places where it fails:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-79a5\">Shadow bans and opaque \u201calgorithmic\u201d decisions<\/li>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-3ca4\">Unfair curation system that benefits celebrities and established brands<\/li>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-c6ec\">Ads that are getting more and more intrusive<\/li>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-5d20\">Anti-competitive ad share practices<\/li>\n<li id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-0f46\">Censorship that is beginning to affect <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobin.com\/2022\/06\/youtube-google-big-tech-censorship-misinformation-left-wing-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/jacobin.com\/2022\/06\/youtube-google-big-tech-censorship-misinformation-left-wing-media&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027822000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2HDv1bBHaSe75IDiD9iXms\">left and right<\/a> equally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-1b17\">If I\u2019m playing Devil\u2019s Advocate, there\u2019s an old saying: \u201cIf you <em>aren\u2019t <\/em>willing to line up and get fucked, there are a thousand more people who are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-0f99\">YouTube\u2019s hegemony will not be an easy breakup.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-0742\">Like Google, YouTube is a verb that everyone uses: \u201cJust YouTube it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-d324\">But YT is shooting itself in the foot with these asinine user policies; it\u2019s disenfranchising the same users who made it what it is today.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-8af3\">This is all to say that competition will improve YouTube, not kill it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-f749\">And the sooner we find an alternative, the better.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"separator\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<p id=\"m_-1743517307311378414gmail-2190\"><em>Well, it seems that Twitter deal is once again on hold (or at least <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/elon-musk-tries-to-halt-twitter-trial-with-a-sneaky-new-play\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/elon-musk-tries-to-halt-twitter-trial-with-a-sneaky-new-play&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667396027822000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0IcrjDY2CTnOfdtfU67fT9\"><em>complicated<\/em><\/a><em> once again).
