On July 31, Brandy<\/strong><\/a> shared one of her most personal works to date with the release of her seventh album \u201cB7\u201d. Throughout the album, Brandy details her struggles with mental health and now she\u2019s become even more candid in an interview with People<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cI was a little bit lost eight years ago musically, creatively, spiritually,\u201d she said. \u201cI had to pull myself together, I had to pull it all together and make it all make sense.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Brandy is known for her over 20 year career that\u2019s brought about such hits like \u201cI Wanna Be Down\u201d, \u201cThe Boy Is Mine\u201d and \u201cSittin\u2019 Up in My Room\u201d. At 41 years old, it\u2019s no surprise that Brandy\u2019s journey has been filled with ups and downs. One series of major incidents even led her to a dark place.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In 2006, she was involved in a car accident that claimed the life of a 38-year-old woman. Brandy wasn\u2019t criminally charged and she settled out of court with the woman\u2019s family. Still, the incident took quite a tole on her. This along with the heartbreak of failed relationships caused Brandy to contemplate suicide, according to People.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cI remember laying in bed super depressed,\u201d she told the magazine. \u201cI [told] myself, \u2018So, you\u2019re just going to go out like this? That\u2019s wack. You have a daughter. If you can\u2019t do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life.’\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Brandy says her daughter Sy\u2019rai,<\/strong> now 18, helped pull her out of a dark place.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cIf Sy\u2019rai wasn\u2019t here, I wouldn\u2019t be either,\u201d she says. \u201cThe place that I was in, it just felt like I wasn\u2019t going to make it through.\u201d https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vr2r3H477uY?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&autohide=2&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Brandy welcomed Sy\u2019rai in 2002 with her then partner, producer Robert Smith<\/strong>. The couple would split a year later and Smith eventually reveal that he and Brandy were never married, despite what they\u2019d portrayed while filming a reality TV show during her pregnancy. \u201cIt changed people\u2019s perspective of me,\u201d Brandy says of becoming a mother and her involvement with Smith, \u201cbut I had to focus on what was important, which was Sy\u2019rai.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Brandy has filled her album \u201cB7\u201d with personal revelations that she was initially scared to share.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cI was thinking, \u2018Did I go too deep? Did I go too far in what I was singing about?\u2019 But I didn\u2019t dwell on those thoughts,\u201d she says. Brandy continues to monitor her mental health via therapy, meditation, journaling and her faith.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
