Black gunshot victim dies after being run over by police car<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n

The Springfield Police Department says the crash was an \u201caccident.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to WHIO-TV, Cole called 911 at 11:15 p.m. local time on Sunday (June 13). The man told dispatchers<\/a> he was \u201cin the middle of the street\u201d and \u201cabout to die\u201d after being shot by someone.<\/p>\n

Officer Amanda Rosales responded to the scene of the shooting<\/a>. Cole stayed on the phone with dispatchers and said, \u201cThey just hit me”<\/p>\n

Who hit you?\u201d the dispatcher asked<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe police<\/a>,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

Autopsy results, reported on Thursday (June 17), showed Cole was shot<\/a> in the back of his left arm and that the bullet pierced \u201cthrough the skin and soft tissue.\u201d He also had abrasions to his back and lower chest, blunt force trauma to his torso and internal bleeding. His sternum and several ribs were fractured. The report said Cole \u201cmay have been struck by a vehicle and [was] shot in the left arm,\u201d but did not specify his cause of death.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday (June 16), Springfield Police Chief Lee Graf identified Rosales as the officer who struck Cole<\/a> with her police car.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was an accident. It doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s ok. It was an accident,\u201d he said. \u201cThis was not an intentional act on the part of the officer<\/a>. I am sure of that. From what we are initially piecing together, remember this is all under investigation, the lead officer was trying to catch the addresses on the house. Eric was lying in the street as you can see from the videos and the officer did not see him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a complicated incident and we\u2019re trying to gather facts,\u201d he added.<\/a><\/p>\n

An investigation into the incident<\/a> is currently being led by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The Springfield Police Division is also conducting an internal probe into the shooting and crash.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cole\u2019s family is calling for full transparency about what happened.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe thinking the gun people that shot him ran him over<\/a>, but the Springfield Police Department ran him over. So yes, we\u2019re upset,\u201d Cole\u2019s cousin said at Wednesday\u2019s press conference. \u201cWe\u2019re all upset.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Springfield chapter of the NAACP also released a statement<\/a> saying they will be involved with the investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will make sure of transparency.<\/a> That\u2019s part of our job. We will have every piece of paper with the information on it,\u201d Chapter President Denise Williams said.<\/p>\n
